Eating our own dogfood

Welcome to the worlds first consumerisation blog (or at least the first that I know about).

Why should we use blogger...? A couple of thoughts...
  • It's a consumer tool (owned by Google)
  • It's hosted externally (so fit with our eat-our-own dogfood approach)
  • There is some degree of control over permissions - yes don't worry if I've set this up properly those folk from P&G shouldn't be reading this
  • Consumerisation is a big subject, so sharing some of the thinking as it develops will be important.
  • You're also in control you can subscribe or unsubscribe at will -
  • Finally this is not costing us anything (other than energy) and took about 30mins to setup.
Some obvious concerns, would be around Public vs. Private. The blog is closed (at the moment) but we should agree - what can / should and can't / shouldn't be included. Some common sense should apply here. The first rule might be, not to use any company names or brands?
So thoughts? Ideas? Should we be doing this differently?

  1. Don't you think this is absolutely BRILLIANT!! I am loving the whole world of blogging....really exciting to see the consumerisation team online and involved. I think we should probably be keeping this little gem confined to our "@unilever.com" colleagues rather than the general population of the world...mainly as we will naturally gather thoughts on the "unilever impact" of this agenda and I'm not sure the world is really ready for that yet...however really keen to see the whole of Unilever IT invited to join in ASAP!!

  2. Isn't there something to be said for opening it up to the wider world? (Says the security guy)

As long as we were careful not to put anything in that was commercialy sensitive.

If I had to argue with myself I could come up with:

Pro - You could get some great feedback from people who are truly interested in the topic or involved in similar projects for other companies.

Con - You could be preyed upon by endless thousands of sales people trying to involve themselves in our project.

Pro - You may gather postivive attention around what we are doing from the industry media.

Con - We may have to tone down some of things you talk about in order to not let anything out that may be used against us by unscrupulous vendors / service providers.

There are probably heaps more - but it sits pretty even with me.

  3. I agree with Mr. Burns that we should consider opening some of the discussion to wider/public audience. Although we clearly have a large consumer population within Unilever, we really do need to keep an external focus on this if we want to get the best ideas and get the mast value from it.

Very pleased to see a blog started on this.... could this be the first step in enabling blogging for other areas within IT and the business?
